Libraries invite community feedback on patron needs, future

June 25, 2021

Survey open through July 23

Robbins and Fox libraries began a broad-based strategic planning process in the spring, and they now seek community input through a survey available at robbinslibrary.org or surveymonkey.com/r/ZWYFDFS. The survey will be open through Friday, July 23 and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Paper surveys are available in the library by request as well as surveys in Chinese, Japanese, Spanish and French.

The results will inform future priorities and investments, with the ultimate goal of improving library services to the town.

In collaboration with a community/library steering committee, consultants from Library Strategies Consulting Group are especially focused on gauging unmet, undermet and emerging needs in Arlington as they relate to library service.

“Whether you’re a super-user or have never darkened our doorstep, we want to hear from you,” says Director of Libraries Andrea Nicolay. “The only way we’ll be able to meet Arlington’s needs is if we hear from a wide variety of residents about what you like and don’t like.”

Public libraries create a strategic plan every four to six years and use that plan to guide year-over-year activities. In addition to survey results, the process takes into account feedback from curated focus groups, the town master plan, community data and library statistics. Having a current, approved strategic plan on file with the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners also makes libraries eligible for state grants.

The new strategic plan will be presented to the library trustees for approval at their August or September meeting, and will be widely publicized and posted on robbinslibrary.org.
