Arlington resident Sharona Jacobs has written a petition, endorsed by the rabbi of her congregation, asking the School Committee change its decision to reopen the public schools in September on the second day of Rosh Hashana.
The committee voted, 4-3, on Jan. 28 to open Tuesday, Sept. 8. Jews consider Rosh Hashana, which mark the new year, a major holiday.
The petition, supported by Eliana Jacobowitz, rabbi of the Temple Bnai Brith in Somerville, says that you do not need to have children in the schools, or be Jewish to support it.
