Channel 5 investigative reporters have obtained an internal MBTA estimate from a consultant of what it will cost to fix the crumbling Alewife Station Garage — $32.1 million.
The cost estimate by Keville Enterprises detailed fixes for the 2,700-car garage, where concrete is crumbling, iron rebar is exposed and temporary supports are in place, supporting beams.
Last month, pieces of concrete fell where cars enter and exit the garage. One chunk fell through the back windshield of a parked car.
Based on from two previous consultant reports, 5 Investigates first reported that the MBTA has known about these problems for at least seven years.
The most recent report, provided last year by the engineering firm Thornton Tomasetti, described the condition of steel reinforced concrete beams on two levels of the garage as between “critical” and “imminent failure.”
