The Arlington Police Department responded to a wide variety of calls for service during the week of Jan. 24 to 31. A sampling of those calls appears below.

• On Tuesday, Jan. 26, at 1:57 p.m., police were called to the Germaine Lawrence School after a student assaulted a staff member. The employee told officers that the student, a 16-year-old juvenile, was enraged that she was not allowed to make a phone call, causing her to push the teacher with

a computer monitor. The victim declined medical attention, but reported the incident to police. While interviewing the student on scene, officers discovered that she had an active warrant for her arrest, for threats to commit a crime. She was arrested on the warrant, but it was subsequently recalled by the court, so she was released. She will also be charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon (computer screen) for the attack on her teacher. Patrol Officers Anthony Bongiorno and Brad Chella responded.

• On Thursday, Jan. 28, at 9:55 p.m., police responded to a motor vehicle accident near the intersection of Pleasant and Maple streets. An Arlington officer was in the area on traffic enforcement when he saw the collision and initiated a response. The incident occurred when one driver attempted a left turn through oncoming traffic, and hit the vehicle passing him on the other side. The driver taking the turn failed field sobriety tests and admitted to police that he had been drinking. He also refused to take a Breathalyzer test, because he thought he would fail it. As a result, Robert Rooney*, 54, was arrested for operating under the influence of liquor, third offense. Rooney’s license was suspended for refusal to take a breathalyzer test. Patrol Officers Brian Fennelly, Neil Simard, and Robert Gamez responded.

• On Friday, Jan. 29, at 8:43 p.m., police responded to a Cedar Avenue residence for a reported domestic assault. The victim told police that her husband had grabbed her arms and pushed her during an argument. Her husband told police that he was in an argument with his wife, and that he believes that she is having an affair. The victim’s 38-year-old husband was arrested for domestic assault and battery. Police contacted the Department of Children and Families to check on the well-being of the couple’s children. Patrol Officers Ed Savill and Chris Gallagher, and street supervisor Sgt. Rich Pedrini responded.

• On Saturday, Jan. 30, at 1:03 a.m., Officer Doug Cronin was on patrol when he spotted a vehicle with illegible license plates and other registration violations. He pulled the vehicle and discovered that the license plates belonged on a different vehicle, which had been junked, and were revoked. Cronin questioned the driver, who had an expired paper license, that had been revoked for habitual traffic offender, and he admitted that the car he was driving, which is his cousin’s is not registered or insured. As a result, France Destin*, 24, of Somerville, was arrested for numerous motor vehicle violations. Patrol Officers Doug Cronin, Michael Wesley, and Matthew Riley responded.

*All arrested persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

About YourArlington

Bob SpragueYourArlington.com is an experiment in community journalism dedicated to reporting news about Arlington, Mass., and the Arlington-related views of its residents. The experiment not unique but is part of a nationwide movement called "citizen journalism." The phrase gained currency through We the Media, a 2004 book by Dan Gillmor. This kind of journalism encourages members of a community to write about that community. The writing may be reporting, or it may be opinion.
