Guide to submitting news

Reporter at workHere is a guide to submitting news for publication at YourArlington.com.

To use the Submit News button of YourArlington, you must be a registered user.

To become one, click here >>

To find the Submit news button, log on with your username and password at the Login button, below the YourArlington nameplate at left. Once logged in, you will see Submit news on the menu bar on the right.

That brings up windows into which you:

1.) Put a headline (title);

2.) See below the story-editing window to choose a story section and category (don't worry about getting this "wrong"; that's what editors are for); and

3.) Enter your story. After the first two paragraphs or so, click the Read more button, below the editing window. This separates your lede and the rest of the story.

Note: It's best to save the story you want to submit in PLAIN TEXT, not MS Word. To do that, save your story in a plaintext file, such as Notepad. Uncheck word wrap, to remove all the hard returns. Then copy and paste that text into the editing windows. Using Word documents or formatted files can result in stories in which code show up, depending on the browser used.

Once you have text placed in the editing windows, then you may use the tools above those windows to add some basic formatting, such as bold or italics.

If your story is about an event that will occur on a specific date, see the Finish Publishing window and click on the calendar icon at right. Click on the date that is one day later than your event.

If you are ready to finally submit your story for posting, click the Save button above the editing tools. Your story will be reviewed for publication.

At this point, it's best to let the publisher know you have sent a story via This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it .

Adding an image to your file involves another process and requires a higher level of access. To see the guide for working with an image, click here >>

About YourArlington

Bob SpragueYourArlington.com is an experiment in community journalism dedicated to reporting news about Arlington, Mass., and the Arlington-related views of its residents. The experiment not unique but is part of a nationwide movement called "citizen journalism." The phrase gained currency through We the Media, a 2004 book by Dan Gillmor. This kind of journalism encourages members of a community to write about that community. The writing may be reporting, or it may be opinion.
